Now a free agent after his 8 year, $72 million deal expired at the end of the season, P.K. Subban could find his way back home to Toronto. Although not officially a free agent until July 13, when free agency opens, the Leafs could be keen on bringing P.K. in on a discounted short term deal. Since signing his long term deal with the Habs years ago, and playing the majority out between Nashville and New Jersey, Subban's numbers have not reflected a $9 million player. Since 2018 he has only scored 26 goals and amassed only 90 points, well below his 45-50 point average in the years prior.
If the Leafs and Subban agreed on a Giordano type deal, it would mean the Leafs would once again have to move a defenseman out. The likely candidates being Muzzin and Holl. As right handed defenseman, signing Subban could mean the Leafs trading Holl and saving money all in one fell swoop. That wouldn't be a bad thing considering Holl is not great 5-on-5 and has struggled for more than a season now. Additionally, he will be entering the final year of his contract at 2 million and given he has been playing top 4 minutes, he will likely be asking for a hefty raise. The Leafs need Muzzin more than they need Holl given how well liked he is in the room and his stabile presence on the blue line. He may not be as fleet a foot as he once was but he is one of the Leafs more physical defensemen.
