Leafs GM Kyle Dubas did his best to get out in front of things on Wednesday, following Gross' comments, saying:
Unfortunately, with Gross having taken the call with the Toronto media and making the comments that he did, Leafs Nation is already beginning to turn on Sandin, especially once it was pointed out that Gross also represents William Nylander and did so during his infamous holdout.
Once the fact that Nylander is represented by Gross came to light, Leafs fans began to look at the situation with a bit more of a pessimistic lens.
Some have gone so far as to demand that Sandin, 22, be moved out in a deal to address a need elsewhere in the lineup. While that certainly isn't the worst idea if Dubas can find a player of a similar age with a high ceiling, trading a budding young star defenseman could be one of those moves that we look back on later and criticize. This is almost a no-win scenario for Dubas unless a fair deal is signed - which it doesn't appear that Sandin and Gross are interested in.
