Leafs forward to miss significant time due to injury suffered during training camp
Yesterday, the Leafs revealed new groups for their on-ice sessions at training camp. Group One had mostly Marlies and prospects that are not going to be making the team out of camp, while Group Two was essentially the Leafs' roster with a few additions on the bubble, including Easton Cowan. One player that was surprisingly not included in Group Two was Dylan Gambrell, who was expected to challenge for a roster spot with the Leafs.
The 27-year-old signed a 1-year deal with the Leafs this off-season worth $775K and was perceived to have the inside track to a 4th line role. It was a bit of a surprise to not see him included in Group Two on Wednesday, but now we know why his name was left off the list as the Leafs revealed today that Gambrell has suffered a concussion and will miss the remainder of camp.
Gambrell was signed by the Leafs to add some physicality and speed to the bottom-six as well as to provide some penalty killing depth after the departures of Ryan O'Reilly, Noel Acciari and Alexander Kerfoot.
Gambrell spent the last two seasons with the Ottawa Senators, where he played in 123 games, registering 17 points. A second round pick of the Sharks in 2016, Gambrell made his NHL debut in 2017 and became an NHL regular during the 2019-20 season with San Jose.
