27-year-old discusses frustrating recovery process while hoping to earn roster spot with Leafs in camp
An undrafted free agent, Bobby McMann parlayed four fairly productive years at Colgate University into and NHL contract after spending his first three seasons as pro in the ECHL and AHL. The 27-year-old got his first taste of the NHL last season when he joined the Leafs for 10 games in two separate stints, where he registered a lone assist. Unfortunately for McMann, a knee injury with the Marlies and an adductor injury with the Leafs cut his season short and have lingered throughout the off-season.
McMann is making progress, however, as he has been able to participate in training camp without a red no-contact jersey and is slowly getting better. Following practice yesterday, McMann discussed how his recovery is going and how much easier it has been since being back at the rink with the Leafs.
"Some days it's up (and) some days have been down, but generally, the trend has always been I'm getting better and that's where I'm at. It feels a lot easier, less thinking about it when you're with the guys," McMann said.
The Leafs, and McMann for that matter, are hopeful that he will be able to recover fast and well enough to get into at least the last couple of pre-season games before the season begins. He won't likely be starting with the Leafs out of camp, but if all goes well and he returns to action and continues his torrid scoring pace with the Marlies (21 goals in 30 games last season) McMann should be at or near the top of the list to be called up if and when there is an injury.
