Leafs goaltender Matt Murray drops a sensational quote that shows his championship mindset
For Leafs goaltender Matt Murray, the start to his 2022-23 season has been far less than ideal. After posting a .970 save percentage across 3 appearances in the preseason, Murray seemed poised to remind the entire league that he's a two-time Stanley Cup Champion. Unfortunately, after a rough first outing in Montreal, Murray suffered an untimely adductor injury in practice and has been sidelined ever since.
While Murray's misfortune could have deflated him and planted seeds of doubt in his mind, the 28-year-old has instead taken the opinion that there are ups and there are downs. When you accept that you don't have control over certain things and realize that you can only play the hand you're dealt, it relieves some of the pressure. That perspective has helped him during his time on the sidelines.
"Ups and downs are just a fact. A fact of life. A fact of hockey. You're going to have both. Looking at it that way, you can kinda separate yourself from it a bit. Maybe that takes the pressure off."
-Murray on the things he can control and the things he can't
Obviously, Murray has a good head on his shoulders. That much is evident in what Murray said next.
"Listen.. You're nothing when you get to the rink, and you're nothing when you leave the rink. It's what you do in between that's going to make you something."
-Matt Murray's Championship mindset
Ladies and gentlemen, that's why he's a two-time Cup Champ. Those are some potentially iconic words. If the Leafs can put it all together, live by those words and surge at the right time, we could be looking back on this quote as a real turning point for this team.
Murray is slated to return within the next few games, perhaps Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. Hopefully, with some help from the team and managing his workload, he'll be able to remain healthy for a long stretch here and help this team string together some wins and help put them into a position where they can challenge to win their division and secure home ice advantage and a Wild Card 1st round opponent.
