Despite their efforts, the Leafs failed to get it done in overtime. The overtime loss tonight marks their sixth on the season, only winning one out of seven appearances in the extra frame at 3-on-3. Although this has not been their strong suit, it's practically the only area that needs improvement, even after a slow start to the season.
For most of the game, the Leafs were in front, but as Keefe mentioned, they struggled to keep the puck away from the Lightning down the stretch, eventually giving them a 3-2 lead in the third period.
Most viewers watching felt the Leafs deserved a better fate after leading the game and outshooting the Lightning 39-33. Matt Murray was solid, making 29 saves against a lethal Lightning offense. This offense would get the last laugh, as Alex Killorn would put the Leafs away in overtime despite a late tying goal by Mitch Marner, his second of the game.
Regardless of his stellar play, Murray knew he had let in a weak one where his team needed him the most down the stretch. He admitted as much after the game. But again, Murray has been phenomenal since returning from injury; it's not a goal that should alter the fanbase's outlook on him. He's been largely excellent this season.
The Leafs have not lost a regular-season game since November 11th against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In this streak, the Leafs have lost three games in overtime but still find themselves second in the Atlantic Division with a 15-5-6 record, four points shy of the division lead.
With how well they have played recently, this loss is not one to dwell on, as Keefe pointed out.
