Jarnkrok has been absent from practice and games for the last week or so in training camp with what the Leafs were calling a day-to-day injury. On Monday, it was revealed that Jarnkrok had twisted his neck during practice last week, but feels much better and is ready to play. At the time of his absence, many thought that it was because he was going to be traded to give the Leafs some cap flexibility. That, however, was never the case.
Mark Giordano was absent from practice on Monday which had many people wondering if the Leafs' blueline suffered another injury, but Sheldon Keefe was quick to clear that up following practice. Giordano, who turns 40 today and is the oldest player in the league, was given a maintenance day. Giordano has skated in just 2 of the Leafs' pre-season games so far, but will likely play in one or both of the Leafs' final two games against Detroit.
With Jarnkrok healthy and ready to go, Brad Treliving and Sheldon Keefe will have some difficult decisions to make in the coming days as the Leafs may have to run with a 20-man roster, barring any trades prior to the start of the season, in order to become cap compliant. The Leafs are currently $2.9M over the cap and could be $1.8M over if they place Conor Timmins on LTIR, but it would still require at least two players to be sent to the minors, which almost certainly means that Martin Jones will go on waivers this week.
