Salming's passing was made all the more tragic by the details surrounding it. At 71 years old, the famously fit Salming was diagnosed with ALS this summer, a horrific disease that interrupts signals from the brain. Salming's body was still fit, and his mind was still clear, but due to ALS, his brain and body couldn't communicate properly. There is currently no cure for ALS, and despite improvements in modern medicine, therapeutic treatments are still woefully ineffective.
In order to help in the fight against ALS and to honour the memory of Börje Salming, the Leafs will be offering the patches they've been wearing on their shoulders since Salming's passing for sale. All proceeds will go towards ALS Canada. There will also be auctions for game worn jerseys and equipment, once again with all proceeds going to ALS Canada.
Personally, I can't think of a more perfect way to remember Salming. Truly a cause worthy of the King himself, and the patch, a yellow Tre Kronor crown atop a Maple Leaf in the same shade of blue as the Swedish flag with the name "Börje" embroidered across it, is a beautiful tribute to the man known as "The King."
We will be sure to post the link when the patches, and the auction, go online.
