On Sunday, Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds did something very special when he reached out to Isaiah and his family and treated Isaiah to a night on the town for his 21st birthday. Simmonds did this not for publicity, but because he knew that Isaiah was hurting. He wanted to make an impact on this young man's life. Well, make an impact is what he did.
On top of spending a night out on the town with Isaiah on Sunday, Simmonds also invited Isaiah and his family to attend the Leafs/Wings game at Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit as his personal guests. Simmonds even made it a point to invite Meyer-Crothers and his family to meet Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner in person.
For Isaiah, the hockey community as a whole was probably not a very safe place in his mind after being bullied and tormented by Miller for years. What Simmonds did tonight, as well as Matthews and Marner for taking a few minutes of their time to put a smile on Isaiah and his family's faces, was show Isaiah that the hockey community can also be inclusive, inviting and safe.
Kudos to the Leafs and especially to Wayne Simmonds for making this happen for Isaiah, who appears to have worn a smile the whole night.
