The hockey community was devastated to learn of the passing of 29-year-old Adam Johnson this morning after the former Pittsburgh Penguin suffered a throat cut during a game with the Nottingham Panthers in the U.K. Johnson was entering the offensive zone on a routine play when he was struck in the neck by an opposing player's skate blade.

The thoughts, prayers and condolences have been rolling in with volume on Sunday and the Toronto Maple Leafs are the latest NHL club to offer some words in the wake of Johnson's tragic and untimely death.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs join the hockey community in mourning the passing of Adam Johnson. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his friends, family, and teammates."

Johnson's NHL career wasn't a lengthy one, lasting just 13 games, but he did play an extensive amount with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League. Johnson's professional career in North America came to an end in 2021-22 after one season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He would sign with the Augsburg Panthers in the DEL last summer, before joining the Nottingham Panthers this year in the EIHL.

Johnson was off to a sensational start with Nottingham, having notched 7 points in 7 games at the time of his passing.

Make sure to put your hockey sticks out for Adam tonight. Rest in paradise, king.
