The Leafs recalled Wayne Simmonds earlier today and had to make an additional roster move to allow for them to activate Timothy Liljegren off of LTIR as they were at the maximum roster size. Many thought that Pontus Holmberg or Nick Robertson would be the player being sent down to the Marlies, but everyone was wrong.

The Leafs placed recent Stanley Cup champion Nicholas Aube-Kubel on waivers after practice today to make room for Liljegren. Aube-Kubel was signed in the off-season to a 1-year, $1M contract in the hopes he would provide the Leafs with some more physicality and contribute to a new fourth line identity. Unfortunately, Aube-Kubel has been unable to find his stride with the Leafs so far and has played just once since October 20th. In 6 games with the Leafs, he hasn't registered a point and aside from his physicality, has not contributed much when he has played.

Hopefully no one will place a claim on him, but with the Leafs, they are always bound to lose someone during the season on waivers. Clearly though, the Leafs were pleased with Holmberg's debut Wednesday and while he was a healthy scratch Wednesday, Robertson has done enough to stay with the big club for now.
