Leafs prospect Easton Cowan now leading the OHL in impressive stat category
Easton Cowan wasn't the name many were expecting the Leafs to call on night one of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft with the 28th overall pick, but right about now, just about everyone in Toronto is glad they did.
Cowan isn't the biggest player you'll find, but what he lacks in size he more than makes up for it with his relentless engine, his solid work ethic, hockey IQ, skill and vision. Cowan is an "all situations" player and he's showing it this season in the OHL.
Cowan is not only a top-10 scorer in the OHL this year, with 31 points in 19 games, he also happens to be the league leader in shorthanded points with 6 on the season.
There's very little doubt here that the Leafs nabbed a good one in Cowan. Now, the only thing the Leafs need to be concerned with is allowing him to develop at the right pace, surrounded by the right people.
Cowan's primary goal this season will be to win a championship. Next season, it will be interesting to see how far he goes in Leafs training camp, because for a short time, it looked like he was about to make the team as an 18-year-old.
