The 2021 NHL Entry Draft was a strange one, due to the fact that the draft was not held in person on a draft floor, but rather remotely using Zoom. With the difficulties that COVID-19 presented, teams were unable to send scouts all over North America and Europe, instead leaning heavily on game-tape to assess players' skill sets.

For the Leafs, the 2021 draft was one in which they did not have a lot of draft picks, but boy did they ever make them count. The Buds started with Matthew Knies in the 2nd round, snagged Ty Voit in round 5 and then plucked Vyacheslav Peksa in round 6. So far, the early returns on all 3 prospects have been overwhelmingly positive.

In Voit's case, he might be the biggest surprise of the bunch, which is saying a lot, given how highly touted Knies is. But, while Knies is quietly plugging away at a point-per-game with 5 points through 5 games in the NCAA, Voit is absolutely setting the OHL on fire.

Voit has amassed an astonishing 17 points through just 9 games for the Sarnia Sting this season, scoring 6 times (including 2 game-winning goals) and racking up 11 assists. This is turning out to be a real coming out party for the 5'9, 150-pound forward.

Given his small stature, Voit will need to add some thickness to his frame before he's ever in the running for an NHL job, but the skills are certainly there. If Voit continues to absorb everything he can from the Leafs' development staff and bulk up a bit to 175-180 lbs, there's no reason to think that he can't be an impact playmaker at the NHL level.
