On November 2nd in a game against the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren was sent awkwardly into the boards by Boston's Brad Marchand. Liljegren has been out with a high ankle sprain since then. Liljegren has begun skating again by himself and took to the ice this morning for a brief skate before a rare Sunday practice for the Leafs.

Following practice, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on Liljegren's progress.

"No set timeline, other than to say medical staff is really happy with how he has progressed. He has felt good on the ice and he has been able to do a lot more in the early going here than they perhaps anticipated. So that's very encouraging. He's experienced this before. He's told me this one doesn't feel nearly as bad as that one coming back."

While Liljegren is still likely a few weeks away from returning to action, the update is a welcome one for Leaf fans as they watch the likes of William Lagesson, Simon Benoit and Conor Timmins try to fill the void left by himself, fellow Swede John Klingberg and veteran Mark Giordano.

Liljegren has quietly become one of the Leafs' best all-around defensemen. In the 10 games he played prior to the injury, Liljegren was averaging slightly under 18 minutes per game and was playing in all situations. Although he only had 1 assist in those 10 games, he was very effective in his own zone, defensively and in terms of helping the Leafs exit their zone.
