Leafs react to garbage being tossed on the ice and thrown at them on the bench
After the Devils had their third goal of the night called back for a distinct kicking motion, Devils fans were understandably upset and annoyed. Unfortunately, they voiced their displeasure by littering the ice with beer cans, pop bottles and food. There was so much being thrown over the Leafs bench that the Leafs were forced to retreat to the tunnel until fans stopped.
"I understand why (fans) are frustrated at that point, three disallowed goals is uncommon. But that's pretty dangerous, throwing full cans like that. Never the way to go about that," responded Matt Murray who is now 3-0-1 with a .943 save percentage since returning from injury.
No, I've never been a part of something like that, to be honest," said 39-year-old Mark Giordano., who has played over 1,000 games in his NHL career. "We realized pretty quick they were coming hot & heavy so we got out of the way & got into the room & waited it out. We can laugh now because no one got hurt or hit. I'm sure a full beer or Coke to the head wouldn't feel good from up there."
Mitch Marner said that Rasmus Sandin almost got hit in the head with a beer before the team retreated down the tunnel, adding, "It's full beers. It's dangerous. We're not looking for that. We're not seeing it coming. Dodged a couple It's a dangerous thing. I don't know [why] it's our fault They're throwing it to try & hit us. It's the first I've ever seen [that]. It's insane."
Always concise with his answers, John Tavares, who scored his team leading 12th of the season to open the scoring called it "disappointing" and "dangerous" and said "it felt better to beat the crowd than the Devils tonight." Heck of quote there from the captain.
It was a wild scene in Newark last night, but the Leafs were able to beat the crowd and the Devils and end their 13-game win streak while hopefully kicking off one of their own as the Buds move along to Minnesota and Pittsburgh on Friday and Saturday.
