One Leafs reporter believes that the Lafferty trade is a pre-cursor to another, fairly substantial move the Leafs are working on. The Athletic's Joshua Kloke believes that the Lafferty deal puts too much pressure on Fraser Minten and Pontus Holmberg too fast, and hypothesized that the Leafs could be looking elsewhere to fill a hole in the roster without having to place such a large burden on two young players, one of which has no experience and the other having very little.
Kloke says that the Leafs could be working on another "big-ish" deal. What that move could be remains unclear, but with just 24 hours until teams must be cap compliant, we will find out sooner than later what that move could be or if there is a move coming at all.
The Leafs giving Minten at least a 9-game look during the regular season seems like a foregone conclusion right now, but it's not a guarantee yet. The Leafs will have lots of moving parts to deal with ahead of tomorrow's deadline and the moves will also depend on the health of those such as Bobby McMann and Dylan Gambrell, who have been injured the majority of camp.
