By demoting the trio to the Marlies, the Leafs now have just 20 skaters on their roster and have $2.725M in cap space thanks to LTIR. Does the demotion of all three mean Kyle Dubas has something in the works? Possibly. Dubas does like to keep his cards close to the chest and was seen on his phone more than what would be considered a normal amount during the game Saturday night.
The Leafs were originally thought to have made a late push to acquire Jakob Chychrun, though several trusted insiders have poured water on that theory over the weekend. The Leafs have also been linked to the likes of Timo Meier and Ryan O'Reilly, as well as Jake McCabe, Max Domi and a handful of other potential trade pieces. With the deadline fast approaching, we know that the Leafs have at least one move, possibly more, coming. Is today the day?
The more likely scenario however, is that the Leafs want to get the three of them into a game before the Leafs take on the Hawks Wednesday as the Marlies play tonight. If no trade is announced on Monday, expect the trio to be recalled immediately following the Marlies' game tonight and to be back at Leafs practice tomorrow morning.
