With the Leafs heading out on a two-game road trip beginning tomorrow in New York, followed by a Saturday matchup in Washington, the Buds have announced that they have loaned defenseman Mac Hollowell to the AHL's Toronto Marlies on Wednesday.

Hollowell had rather successful 6-game run with the Leafs, during which time they won 5 games, losing only to the Tampa Bay Lightning in OT on December 3rd. Hollowell produced a pair of assists in the first 6 games of his NHL career, seeing a season-high 15:09 of ice time across 22 shifts against the San Jose Sharks on November 30th. Not bad for a 4th round pick who nobody put much stock into.

This demotion could mean a few different things. It could mean that the injured Jordie Benn is ready to return to action or it could mean that the Leafs wanted to send Hollowell down before he became waivers eligible. With Benn not having taken any line rushes in the regular rotation in a few weeks, I'd bet it's the latter and not the former as the reason for Hollowell's demotion.
