Lengthy suspension expected for Toronto native after being ejected on Saturday for intent to injure
It hasn't been a great start to the season for the Calgary Flames. Off to a 3-7-1 start, the Flames are already staring down the probability of a pretty substantial re-tooling, if not a full rebuild. Now, they may be without one of their key forwards for a stretch of games as a suspension looms for Toronto native Andrew Mangiapane.
During last night's meeting between the Flames and Seattle Kraken, Mangiapane has backhanded a puck towards the Kraken net, when Jared McCann slid to block the shot, with the puck getting trapped beneath him as he continued to slid into Mangiapane. After the initial contact, Mangiapane leaned over a prone McCann and delivered a cross-check to the back of his neck/head.
McCann played just over 11 minutes in the game as a result of the cross-check and Mangiapane was ejected from the game for attempt to injure. Now, per an announcement from the league, Mangiapane will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety.
We have seen a number of lengthy suspensions handed out thus far this season and if we go back to the playoffs, Jamie Benn was assessed a 2-game suspension for a similar play. As playoff games are worth more than regular season games, it wouldn't be surprising to see Mangiapane suspended for 3-5 games.
