Rumour has it that, when the Vegas Golden Knights had traded Fleury to Chicago, there was a handshake deal in place that the Blackhawks would "do right by" Fleury and allow him to choose his fate at the deadline this season. Well, the decision is in, and Fleury is effectively off the market.
There has been some talk as well that Fleury is amenable to returning to Chicago next season, but that was before Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson had announced that there would be a rebuild in Chicago. Knowing this, Fleury may or may not elect to sign with a team of his choosing in another city this summer.
It was a long shot that Fleury would have ever been acquired by the Leafs anyway, but now the slim chance has been reduced to zero.
Fleury has appeared in 40 games for the Hawks this season, compiling a 17-19-4 record, with a .911 SV% and a 2.83 GAA. Though it has been a far cry from his Vezina Trophy winning season in 2020-21, Fleury has reportedly enjoyed his time in Chicago this season, so it makes sense why he wants to remain there.
