After their fourth loss in a row, this time to the Buffalo Sabres last night, it is no surprise that the Leafs are becoming frustrated with their inconsistent play. It isn't for lack of scoring from their stars either as Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander had a combined eight points for the Leafs last night, including scoring all four of the Leafs' goals.

The Leafs should have dominated a Sabres team that was playing its third game in four nights, second on back-to-back nights and was without top-six forward Dylan Cozens. The complete opposite happened, however, as the Sabres dominated most of the game offensively and defensively. Obviously, the Leafs had moments where they controlled the game, but the constant theme so far this season is not being able to sustain any momentum and being outworked by the opposition. Three separate times after the Leafs tied the game last night, Buffalo responded within five minutes to take the lead back.

Following the game, in which he scored his third hat trick of the season, Auston Matthews expressed his concern about the Leafs' lack of consistency and that it is a pretty urgent matter they have to figure out.

"We haven't played up to our capability for a full 60 minutes & that's on us to figure that out."

Marner not only echoed Matthews' comments, but went into further detail and called out the team for its lack of competitiveness.

"Just need to be a lot better. Need to be way more competitive.Need to back up home ice a lot more. We just need to make sure we're the ones driving & not being passengers."

Having provided all of the offense for the Leafs last night, Marner and Matthews have every right to be frustrated and call out the rest of the team. They're doing everything they can to help the team win, but no one else, aside from Nylander and Morgan Rielly, are helping offensively or defensively at this point. With the Leafs at practice today, it would not be surprising to see a very high-tempo, exhausting skate following their fourth loss in a row.
