Max Domi asked whether he'll switch to his dad's 28 with Sam Lafferty gone. His answer might surprise you
The Toronto Maple Leafs open up their 2023-24 season tonight at home against arguably the team's most heated rival, the Montreal Canadiens. The Buds will have a number of new faces making their official Leafs debuts tonight, including the likes of UFA signees Ryan Reaves, Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi.
Unlike Reaves and Bertuzzi, Domi has longstanding ties with the organization, as his father, Tie Domi, shed his blood, sweat and tears for the team over 12 of his 16 NHL seasons, all while a young Max Domi watched from the family box at the then Air Canada Centre.
Domi met with the media after Wednesday's morning skate ahead of what will be his first official game in a Leafs sweater - something he has dreamt of since he was just a kid. Domi opted to wear the number 11 when he signed with the Leafs, but many had wondered if that was more to do with the fact that former teammate Sam Lafferty was in possession of his dad's #28. When asked by the media whether he plans to make the switch from 11 to 28 now that Lafferty has been traded, Domi revealed that the thought hasn't even crossed his mind.
"No, absolutely not. That's my old man's number ... I will not be wearing 28. I'm sticking with 11." - Max Domi on sticking with #11 instead of switching to #28
After signing Domi to a 1-year, $3M deal this summer, Leafs GM Brad Treliving revealed that Domi wasn't brought in because of his family legacy. He was brought in because of the merit of his body of work at the NHL level. It would appear as though Domi wants to try to establish his own legacy, which is certainly respectable.
