Members of Leafs Nation threaten the lives of NHL ref and his family during Tampa/Toronto series
After an atrocious Game 1 versus Tampa, reports have surfaced that certain Leaf fans were very unhappy with the officiating of Wes McCauley. That certain group of Leaf fans reportedly made actual death threats to McCauley and his family.
There is a belief circulating that McCauley has some sort of vendetta against the Leafs and Sheldon Keefe. Sheldon Keefe denied that there is a rift between the two, but judging by McCauley's officiating in Game 3 last night, in which the Leafs did not get a single powerplay, Leafs Nation finds it hard to believe that no such rift exists. The Buds are now a combined 0-9 in playoff games officiated by McCauley.
Leaf fans are some of the most passionate fans in the NHL, but threatening an official and his family is certainly crossing a line. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. We may not always see eye-to-eye with officials or support their on-ice decisions, but their lives off the ice and the lives of their families are certainly off-limits.
