With news coming out of Edmonton on Friday that head coach Dave Tippett is on thin ice, some pundits have begun to speculate as to whether or not former Leafs bench boss Mike Babcock could he an option for the Oilers.

Postmedia's Michael Traikos had pitched the suggestion to TSN's Ryan Rishaug after Rishaug had reported the news on Tippett being at risk of losing his job should the Oilers fail to snap their losing skid on Saturday. Rishaug's colleague, Darren Dreger had this to say in response.

"Babcock says he intends on staying with the U of S until their season is over end of March. He has no intention of coaching in the NHL this year."

Babcock has not worked in the NHL since being relieved of his duties by Leafs GM Kyle Dubas back in November of 2019.

What Babcock meant by "this year" is up for debate.. did he mean the remainder of this season? Or did he mean all of 2022?

Babcock is under contract with the Leafs through June 30th, 2023, meaning he makes just under $6M per year from the Leafs both this season and next.
