While all of that was fun for Marner, the highlight of his weekend was actually spending time with Sidney Crosby, just chatting and sharing stories. One of which included Crosby's first All-Star appearance with current Leaf President Brendan Shanahan while Marner was licking his spilt coffee off of his phone. When Marner asked what it was like to spend the weekend with Crosby, he had a lot to say.
"Watching the Golden Goal, obviously that one was a pretty big memory for me. That one went viral in our household, so that was a pretty exciting one. Lot of YouTube videos on Sid. I grew up with a couple of those Crosby Reebok sticks. Those were kind of one of my favorite sticks growing up. Anything that had the Crosby name on it, I wanted it in my hands."
Sid was a mentor and an idol to many of the players he skated with this past weekend and all of them had nothing but kind words for the sure-fire Hall of Famer, but the biggest takeaway for them, including Marner is how down to earth and easy going Sid is away from the rink.
"Just how Sid goes about his business, he's competitive as hell, wants to win anything he's a part of. Just a super great guy off the ice as well. Been able to kind of get to know him a little bit this weekend, and a camp we had two years ago. Just an awesome guy. For how talented and skilled he is, and for what he does on that ice, he's just a super down-to-earth human being and something that you appreciate from someone," Marner said of Crosby's off-ice personality.
Unfortunately for Marner his attempt at becoming Crosby's new BFF was short-lived as the weekend came to a close fairly quickly. Who knows though, with the Leafs on their bye week, maybe Marner convinced Crosby to let him stay at his place for a couple of days this week.
