Mitch Marner has previously revealed that he is probably closer to Jake Muzzin than he is to anyone else on the team, including Auston Matthews - with whom he is very close. That's why Monday's announcement regarding Muzzin hit him extra hard.

On Monday, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas spoke with the media, confirming that Jake Muzzin's injury was a significant one, adding that the Leafs won't have real idea how bad the situation is for Muzzin until he is re-evaluated in February. Muzzin suffered a cervical spine injury back on October 17th against the Arizona Coyotes that has kept him out of action ever since.

For Marner, however, he didn't find out about Muzzin's injury from the team. He found out from Muzzin himself, during what he called an "emotional" 1-on-1 conversation with the veteran defenseman himself.

"When you get news like that, it's pretty emotional. It was just him and me in the room when he told me, and it's a sad thing. Like I've said before, there are a lot bigger things here than hockey and playing this game, and that's your family ..."

-Marner on receiving the heartbreaking news from Jake Muzzin

Muzzin continues to be a locker room leader for the Buds and he continues to attend the gym every day to put in the work that he can in order to remain healthy in hopes of perhaps rehabbing his injury, but the odds of him returning are not good and I think even he knows it.
