With his 16-game point streak now in the bank, Marner moves into a tie with the likes of Dave Andreychuk (1993-94), John Anderson (1983-84) and Babe Dye (1921-22) for the 3rd longest point streak in franchise history and he now sits just 2 games behind Eddie Olczyk (1989-90) and Darryl Sittler (1977-78), who both had 18-game point streaks.
Prior to the start of the game, Sportsnet Analyst Kelly Hrudy stated that he hopes Marner does not beat the 18-game streaks of Olczyk and Sittler because of how special those two players were and are to Toronto. Personally, I think that's a bit of a slap in the face to a young superstar like Marner, who could very well breaking multiple franchise records by the time all is said and done.
It's like Wayne Gretzky says whenever he's asked about the possibility of Alex Ovechkin breaking his all-time goals record... Gretzky is hopeful that Ovechkin will be able to pull it off because it's "great for the game". If only Hrudy shared those sentiments. I'm sure if you were to ask Olczyk and Sittler, they'd probably want to be in the building to congratulate Marner if and when it happens.
