Jeff Veillette tweeted out Wednesday something interesting about the Hart Trophy voting results, particularly in relation to the Montreal-based journalists. If the Hart was only voted on by the ten Montreal representatives, these would be the results:
1. Jonathan Huberdeau (3-3-0-1-1)
2. Connor McDavid (2-2-2-1-2)
3. Roman Josi (2-3-1-0-0)
4. Auston Matthews (1-1-3-3-1)
5. Igor Shesterkin (2-3-1-0-0)
It's one thing to have Auston Matthews and his 60-goal season in second place behind Connor McDavid and his most points in the entire league. It's quite unfathomable and honestly laughable to have both superstar players, either of whom could have been shoo-ins to win it, end up behind a player like Huberdeau, who had an impressive season, but not anywhere near MVP caliber.
Huberdeau had a fantastic season. There's no question.. but he wasn't even in the same tier as Matthews in terms of goal production and he was outscored by McDavid. His defensive impacts were not elite and he saw 72% of his shifts start in the offensive zone. This isn't to discredit or sell short Huberdeau's career year, but these results simply show the outlandish and unappreciative nature of the Montreal sports media beat and the confusing comprehension of their so-called hockey knowledge and "expert" opinion.
