A report from Sens Buzz on Twitter revealed that Murray has officially unfollowed the Leafs on Instagram, which will certainly add fuel to the fire that he will be gone within the week. Murray played solid for stretches this season, but ultimately his health just couldn't hold up, most likely leaving he and the team frustrated.
With a week remaining to buy out undesirable contracts, the Maple Leafs have been rumoured to be considering parting ways with the veteran goaltender and saving a large amount of cash along the way. A buyout would save the Leafs 4 million this year and only accrue a cap hit of $687,500, but then it would rise to $2 million in dead money the following season.
Due to the fact that the Ottawa Senators retained salary when they traded him to the Leafs last summer, they will be on the hook for some of that dead cap as well as losing a retained salary slot for the next 2 seasons.
It's nothing too egregious for the Senators but they will have $229,167 in dead cap in 2023-24 and then $666,667 in 2024-25. They will save money this off-season since they would've originally been on the hook for $1.562 million.
A break-up between both sides is well on the horizon and it's more of a "when" situation rather than an "if". Murray couldn't stay healthy and when he was in the lineup, he was subpar at best after a blistering start to his tenure.
