The Devils had emerged as a frontrunner for Meier's services after reports confirmed that the Devils might be the only team which he'd consider signing an extension with. Funny enough, however, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, it does not appear as though a contract extension is a part of the deal sending Meier to NJ.
The 26-year-old Swiss winger enjoyed a breakout season in 2021-22, emerging as a breakout star in the league, scoring 76 points in 77 games last season, including 35 goals. Meier was not a flash in the pan, as his success has continued into this season. So far, through 57 games, he has amassed 31 goals and 52 points.
At the moment, the exact return is unknown for the Sharks, but it was rumoured this past week that San Jose was pushing to have the Devils include center Dawson Mercer in the deal. We'll provide an update with the return as soon as we have it.
**Update, per E.J. Hradek @ 5:17pm - Mercer is not expected to be involved in the Meier trade***
***Update, 9:02PM ET, Sharks release full details of the trade***
