Watch William Nylander's incredible OT winner against the Wild with Joe Bowen's amazing play call
No matter who Sportsnet, TSN or any of the American TV outlets hire to call Leafs games, none of them can hope to match the incomparable Joe Bowen. The Voice of the Maple Leafs has been confined to the radio waves the past few years, but oddly enough, when the Leafs put together any sort of video, it's his play call that gets used. Why the major networks refuse to allow this man on TV is beyond me. Nobody else brings the excitement, the energy, the PASSION that Bowen does. Take, for example, the Bally Sports call on Nylander's spectacular overtime winner against the Wild on Friday.
With commentary like that, it's no wonder Bally is facing bankruptcy. Who on earth wants to listen to someone who calls such an electrifying play with all the energy of a stuffy church sermon? Bowen's call, on the other hand, was perfect. His rabid Leaf fandom shines through as he shares the same excitement we all did when that goal was scored.
Twitter user @LeafsJelly, or LeafsJellyHD on Youtube, is truly doing God's work, he takes every Leafs goal and matches it up with Bowen's call, posting it for all of us to enjoy. His work is so popular that even Joe himself has mentioned him on the broadcasts, and the Leafs never take it down either. Clearly somebody at MLSE knows just how much we all appreciate hearing Bowen's play calls and sees that it doesn't hurt their brand, if anything, it enhances it. Now if we could only get a full playoff series with Joe and Jim Ralph calling the action, it may just be the good luck charm the Leafs need to finally get over that first round hump!
