Dadonov has just 18 points in 50 games for the Habs this season while Gurianov has 9 points in 43 games for Dallas. Dadonov will be a UFA at the end of the season and the Habs are retaining 50% of his $5M cap hit. Gurianov is an RFA at the end of the season and has a cap hit of $2.9M.
This appears to be an attempt to give both wingers a fresh start as they have both fallen out of favour with their current teams. For the Stars, they're getting the more productive player for their playoff push. For the Habs, they're getting a young, struggling winger, under team control. At 25 years of age, Gurianov is not likely to suddenly become a superstar, but he does have some room to grow before he hits his ceiling. At worst, if he can be a competent middle six winger for the Habs, it's hard to find anything wrong with the deal.
In addition, the St. Louis Blues have traded forward Ivan Barbashev to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a prospect, TSN's Darren Dreger reports. Barbashev was one of the players that the Leafs had acquired about in their deal with the Blues that ended up resulting in Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari being dealt to Toronto late last week.
