Last night against the St. Louis Blues, Maple Leaf forward Auston Matthews was able to make history. He became the fastest Leaf to reach the 500 point plateau, doing so in just 445 games, breaking Darryl Sittler's longstanding record of 517 games.

Post game, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman explained that he believes that Matthews understands the magnitude of such accomplishments in Toronto. So much so that he feels Matthews will re-sign with the Leafs, so that he can continue to do great things in such a massive market and for such a storied franchise. Friedman's full quote is available below.

I think he recognizes the history of the organization and the reason I believe, unless things go really of the rails, he is going to re-sign in Toronto is that I think he understands that he has a chance to do great things in one of the cornerstone franchises of the National Hockey League, and I think that really appeals to him.

Auston Matthews is in the fourth year of a five year deal that is worth over $58 million. On July 1st, 2023, he will become eligible to sign an extension. It was recently rumoured that he would be looking for $15 million per year on an eight year deal. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure, extending Matthews this offseason will be priority number one.
