Last season, we saw the NHL introduce helmet ads in place of the traditional team logos on either side of helmets. This season, the NHL is introducing jersey ads. As with the helmet ads, the jersey ads are being met with criticism, possibly more with people saying that they take away from the clean, traditional look of jerseys that fans are used to. The biggest concern is that fans don't want the jerseys to end up looking like those we see in the European leagues where the entire jersey is covered with sponsors.

In response to that, speaking with ESPN, Keith Wachtel, the NHL's Chief Business Officer and Executive VP of Global Partnerships had this to say:

"In the current program, it's one patch in one area only. The more logos you put on there, the less value there might be. So the clubs wanted to go with the one ad. That's what we'll have for the foreseeable future. There was never a discussion about multiple [ads]. It's one brand on the sweater."

The NHL wasn't the one that pushed for the restriction of one jersey sponsor, it was actually the teams. Although it does seem that the NHL itself does not want its jerseys to end up like its European counterparts either. With that being said though, Wachtel did reveal that the NHL has designated a total of four spots for jersey ads: both shoulders and the left and right chest.

Like the criticisms of the helmet ads at the beginning of last season, those about the jersey ads will likely slow down as people get more accustomed to seeing them on jerseys.
