The Colorado Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild met on Sunday in a heated Central Division rivalry, and during the third period, we saw just how heated their rivalry can be.

With the Avs coming in on a rush, winger Mikko Rantanen dished off the puck to line mate Nathan MacKinnon, but did not realize that he was being lined up by Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, who absolutely levelled Rantanen.

MacKinnon had a front row seat of the hit and really didn't like the view. He thought that Dumba had caught Rantanen a bit high and issued a challenge to Dumba, who obliged him. Bad move by Dumba, who ended up getting rocked by a big right from MacKinnon that dropped him to a knee.

MacKinnon is not exactly known as a fighter, but he sure doesn't mind sticking up for himself and his teammates when the situation calls for it. In this case, he saw Rantanen slow to get up and took matters into his own hands. That's what leaders do.
