Treliving went on to explain that everyone can fix everyone else's team better than their own, with outside opinions not reflecting how the actual business is conducted in an NHL setting. He also made a very surprising observation between this year and last year in the playoffs about the Leafs.
"I thought collectively, Toronto played a better series last year against Tampa Bay and lost, than they did this year and won," said Treliving.
Some of you may agree and some of you may not, but I tend to agree with Treliving on this one. The Leafs dominated the play more in last year's series than they did this year, with the key difference being that they got more favourable bounces this year.
Treliving, an outsider up until a few days ago, has kept a close eye on the Leafs during his time as Flames GM over the last number of seasons. It will be interesting to see how Treliving addresses the team's holes in the lineup to construct them more for playoff hockey.
Treliving doesn't have the same connections and attachment to these players that Kyle Dubas had. There's no question that he would love to hold onto a few of the top players and build those relationships, but it will be a lot easier for Treliving to make big roster changes than it would have been for Dubas, just based on the fact that there is less emotion involved here.
