Spezza has spent most of the summer working diligently alongside Kyle Dubas and the rest of the Leafs' front office staff, playing a key role for the team in scouting and at the draft. He likely also had some input during free agency.
The Leafs made some sneaky good moves this summer, bringing in players like Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Jordie Benn, Adam Gaudette and Calle Jarnkrok, among others - the latter of whom will actually don Spezza's former #19 this season, with Spezza's blessing, of course.
Jarnkrok is not blind to the impact that Spezza had - and continues to have - on this Leafs team, which is why when he was asked about wearing the #19, there was only one answer that he could think to give. Jarnkrok told the media that if Spezza decided to come out of retirement at any point this season, he'll have no bones with giving the number right back to him.
It's probably pretty unlikely that we'll see Spezza make a return this season at 39 years of age, but if he and the Leafs do have any ideas about a potential reunion at the deadline in true Justin Williams fashion, at least we know that Jarnkrok will do right by him.
