Last night against St Louis, Connor McDavid crossed the St. Louis blueline with his skates while he was in the midst of pulling the puck in front of him. Players are allowed to cross the line without the puck on their stick as long as the linesman deems them to be in control of and have possession of the puck. This is where things get interesting.
After McDavid and the puck cross the line, the puck floats between his skates and Ryan O'Reilly's for a few feet before Colton Parayko plays the puck. Since Parako played the puck after McDavid brought it across the line, but before McDavid touched it, McDavid was deemed to not be in control or possession once he crossed the line. It's really not that hard to follow or understand Oilers fans.
McDavid was frustrated after the game, airing those frustrations to the media and called for a more well-defined and consistent set of rules to avoid these types of discrepancies. It's tough to argue with him, as the rules seem to be open to interpretation by the officials. There isn't really much consistency and McDavid is probably right to question this one.
