Five years ago today, a moustache-less Auston Matthews scored the go-ahead goal for the Leafs in the second period against the Colorado Avalanche. The goal was his 21st of the season, although it should have been his 22nd as he had a goal called back just moments before.
The earlier goal was called back due to a challenge from Colorado for goaltender interference. Once again, it was a debatable call that could've gone either way. Regardless, the goal was called back. Less than a minute later, William Nylander made a ridiculous cross-ice pass to a streaking Matthews who one-timed it passed Jonathan Bernier.
The goal led to one of Matthews' most emphatic celebrations where the future MVP spun back towards the net and signalled the goal with an outstretched hand, like an official.
We've seen a handful of players gesture the same way in recent years, so in some ways, Matthews is a bit of a trailblazer - not just for his goal scoring prowess, but also for the swagger with which he plays.
