At the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators shocked the hockey world when they made a trade that saw two-time 40 goal scorer Alex DeBrincat sent to Ottawa for the 7th overall pick which ended up being Kevin Korchinski, the 39th overall pick which ended up being Paul Ludwinski and a 2024 third round draft pick. The former Hawk still has one year left on his current deal, which carries a $6.4M cap hit. He'll become a restricted free agent next summer.

Per ESPN's Kevin Weekes, despite reports earlier this summer of DeBrincat not wanting to sign an extension just yet with the Senators, the team is actively trying to extend the 2016 second round pick.

DeBrincat, 24, is coming off of a great season with the Hawks, leading them in goals with 41 and putting up 37 assists for a total of 78 points in 82 games. Unfortunately for DeBrincat, he wasn't a part of the Blackhawks' long-term plans and was dealt to trigger a much needed rebuild.

The Ottawa Senators have a bright future and adding DeBrincat to their young core was huge - if they can manage to lock him up long-term. If he plays this season and takes his $9M qualifying offer next summer, he'll be eligible to test free agency in the summer of 2024.
