The Florida Panthers have made headlines on Tuesday, announcing that they have come to terms on a 3-year extension for their future franchise goaltender, Spencer Knight. The reported AAV on the deal is $4.5M per season.

Panthers GM Bill Zito issued the following statement on his future number 1 netminder:

"Spencer is a phenomenal goaltender, as well as an exceptional athlete and person. He has thrived in his professional career, dedicating himself to his training through his first two seasons with our organization. With this extension, we are excited about the present and future of Panthers goaltending."

Panthers GM Bill Zito on Knight's 3-year extension

It's wild to me that the Panthers warranted paying Knight more than the Dallas Stars paid Jake Oettinger (3 years, $4M per season), despite the fact that Oettinger has both more NHL games under his belt and better results to date. Knight has appeared in just 36 NHL games under his belt, with a 23-9-3 record, a collective 2.74 GAA and a career .909 SV%. Oettinger has played more than twice the number of games (77) and boasts a better GAA (2.46) and SV% (.913).

I would imagine that this means that the Panthers are preparing to pass the torch over to the 21-year-old netminder and begin the phase-out of 34-year-old veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky still has 4 years remaining on his current deal, which carries a lofty $10M cap hit.
