Phil Kessel addresses the lack of traction in finding a new NHL home this season
Still without a contract a month into the season, Phil Kessel is one of the more interesting remaining free agents available. A three-time cup champion, NHL Ironman record holder, and a reputable goal scorer still lauded for his shot and speed, Kessel still has a desire to play this season.
Now, Kessel has spoken out about his process on finding an NHL team to take him out. Reports came out around the beginning of the season indicating teams were interested in Kessel, but needed to clear cap space to sign him. Still waiting on that to happen, Kessel himself noted his surprise, and added a bit of his own unique Kessel flair.
"Obviously I'm a little surprised I haven't got anything, but it is what it is, right?"
Hopefully for himself and the millions of fans he's gained during his NHL tenure, Kessel will be able to secure a contract and play a depth role for one more season. If not, however, the 36-year-old has already amassed an incredible career, with 413 goals and 992 points over 1286 career games.
Now, the obvious question of his fit with his old friends, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kessel likely isn't asking for much, maybe even league minimum, but despite a low cap hit, with his defensive inefficiencies, he probably couldn't make any sort of significant positive impact on the Leafs' roster, so I think we can rule the Leafs out here.
