Popular podcast cracks a joke at the Leafs' expense after Spezza's retirement was announced
It was a bittersweet day for Leafs fans after veteran and fan favourite Jason Spezza announced his retirement on Sunday morning. On one hand, it's sad to see Spezza hang up his skates, but on the other hand, it's exciting that he'll be remaining with the club as an executive.
Another exciting factor here is that it means there will be a new face in the bottom six next season, whether that be an internal promotion from the AHL or through a new free agency signing in July.
There has been an outpouring of support on social media for Spezza in the hours since announcing his retirement, but unfortunately, there are still some who want to try to spoil the day by taking liberties and rubbing salt in the wounds.
The official Spittin' Chiclets Twitter account posted a bit of a shot at the Leafs organization and its fans, joking that Spezza's first order of business will be to help plan the Stanley Cup parade for next year - a common trend among Leafs detractors who wish to point out the fact that next year is always the year.
I won't lie.. I cracked a smile when I saw the tweet. But maybe the Chiclets guys should have waited at least a day. Thank goodness Leafs Nation has thick skin.
