As it turns out, the Nylander contract extension was just the tip of the iceberg. Now, Kypreos has another major report regarding the Leafs, this time involving injured netminder Matt Murray. Kypreos believes that not only is Murray planning on returning at some point this season, he also suggests that the Leafs may be interested in extending him.
That would be quite the turn of events if Kypreos has this one right. Murray was originally given a 6-8 month recovery timeline when he underwent hip surgery this fall. The original timeline put him somewhere in the April-May range, and it was always probable that he didn't play at all this season or playoffs as a result. After all, with so much on the line in the postseason, there aren't many teams who are going to risk starting a goalie who hasn't played in a year and who is coming off of major surgery.
Perhaps this means that Murray is well ahead of schedule in his recovery. We can't be certain, of course, until spring rolls around. If Murray is able to skate in gear by March, then who knows? Maybe these is fire behind the smoke. However, for the time being, the only thing we can really do is wait for further information on Murray's condition.
Prior to undergoing surgery, Murray played in 26 games for the Leafs last season, posting a 14-8-2 record, with a 3.01 GAA and a .903 SV%. Murray, 29, is 146-86-24 over his career, with a combined 2.79 GAA and .910 SV% across 8 seasons.
