Columbus has re-signed goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to a one year deal worth $1.3 million for the 2022/23 season. Korpisalo was sidelined for most of the year with a hip injury that required major surgery. He made $3.4 million in actual salary last season, with a $2.8M cap hit, so he is taking a significant pay cut on a «prove me» deal. He was 7-11-0 last season before being sidelined with his hip injury posting a horrendous 4.15GAA and .877 save percentage.
Korpisalo would've been a cheap option for the Leafs if Campbell's asking price were to remain high, forcing the Leafs in a different direction, but it would come at a huge risk given the major hip surgery he is recovering from. Korpisalo should be ready for the start of the season, but personally, I would not have leaned on him as a starter given his hip issue.
The Leafs will have to continue to negotiate with Jack while also keeping an eye out for potential replacements should they be unable to resign him. Some other potential options include Braden Holtby, MAF and Darcy Kuemper.
