Professional wrestler and Leafs superfan ''Edge'' talks about the Matt Murray acquisition
If you're a fan of pro wrestling, you know that Adam "Edge" Copeland is one of, if not the best Canadian Wrestler of all time. The Rated R Superstar grew up in Orangeville, Ontario and like many kids from Ontario, grew up a huge Leafs fan. After a neck injury forced him into retirement, Copeland credits a Gary Roberts inspired lifestyle change to his 2020 comeback.
Edge is scheduled to have his first match in Toronto in over 11 years tomorrow on Monday Night RAW. In celebration, he and the Leafs have released an event specific, limited edition collaboration T-shirt to mark the event.
In an Interview with SI's David Alter, Copeland showed how deep his Leafs fandom really goes, offering his thoughts on the Leafs' goaltending situation ahead of the 2022-23 season.
I look at
Matt Murray and I really don't understand people being up in arms. No offense to the (Ottawa) Senators but he had the Senators in front of [him] and they were in a rebuild. I don't think that's a fair way to judge a goalie.
He's 28, he's won two Stanley Cups, he's played in 12 Stanley Cup final games. He's 8-4 with two shutouts. That's experience you can't manufacture. I say let's give [Murray and Samsonov] a chance and fight for No. 1 and see what happens. And that's usually when that competition breeds some really good results. So let's go for it. Let's see, because I think with the salary cap and where we were at it was kind of impossible. You had to do something. Why not try this? I think you just have to kind of give it a shot and see."
- Adam "Edge" Copeland
In all honesty, Edge is completely right. Murray struggled behind a horrific team in Ottawa while dealing with both mental and physical health issues. A happy, healthy Murray behind a competent hockey team in Toronto will be a very different person than he was in the Nation's Capital.
