Unfortunately, Finland found another gear in the third and managed to tie it midway through and it stated that way until Kent Johnson ended it just 4 minutes into overtime. It appeared increasingly likely that history might repeat itself.
Thankfully for Canada, Blue Jackets prospect Kent Johnson buried the OT winner, but he wouldn't have had the opportunity to give Canada another gold medal on home soil if it weren't for a goal-line save made by Team Canada captain Mason McTavish in overtime.
McTavish was already a factor on both Canadian goals, having an assist on each to end the tournament with a leading 17 points and he deserves a massive assist on the winner for his work to keep it out of the back of the net on a sensational scoring attempt by Leafs prospect Topi Niemela.
Finland had a 3 on 1 that resulted in Dylan Garand making the first save. The rebound was batted past him by Niemela and as it was in the air, McTavish first knocked it out of the air onto the goal-line before clearing it into the corner. Canada quickly made a line change that sent Logan Stankoven and Kent Johnson on a 2 on 1 the other way. Johnson's initial shot was stopped, but he was able to bury the rebound past an outstretched Juha Jatkola.
Canada went 7-0 in the tournament and will look to defend their medal in December when the tournament finally leaves Edmonton and goes to Moncton and Halifax.
