Rangers captain destroys Timo Meier with huge open ice hit
With the Rangers down 2-0 five minutes into the third period against the Devils last night, Timo Meier picked up the puck and was attempting to skate in over the Rangers' blueline. Unfortunately for him, Rangers' captain Jacob Trouba was coming onto the ice at the same time.
Since Trouba was coming from the bench, he got lost and was not seen by Meier until it was too late. Trouba caught Meier with what was deemed a massive, legal check that sent Meier to the ice in a thud. The way Meier fell was Paul Kariya-esque in the 2003 Cup Final when Scott Stevens caught him cutting across the blueline. Meier laid motionless for a few seconds but was eventually able to get up under his own power.
According to the NHL rulebook, the reason there was no penalty called on the play is because officials deemed that head contact was unavoidable as Meier, who was bent over and leaning forward, putting himself in a vulnerable position.
