There have not been any substantial contract talks between the Leafs and Jack Campbell since the end of the season and now it appears that an Atlantic Division rival may have taken aim at the 30-year-old netminder.

On the "Expected Buffalo" podcast, Chad Dedominicis reported that the Sabres are expected to make an offer to UFA defenseman P.K. Subban this summer and are also a potential landing spot for Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell should he make it to free agency on July 13th.

Currently, the Sabres have $43M in cap space and have an elder statesman in Craig Anderson as their number 1 goalie. Like Campbell, Anderson is a pending UFA, along with backups Dustin Tokarski and Malcolm Subban. The Sabres have the cap room to offer a lengthy and lucrative contract to Campbell, who is looking to cash in for the first time in his career. With reports saying he is looking for an annual salary of $5M or more per season, it could be and likely is too rich for the Leafs to pay.

The Sabres have Devon Levi pegged to be their goalie of the future but will need some more development time and is likely another couple of seasons away from full time NHL duties, so a stop-gap is needed. Campbell would certainly provide the Sabres with a tangible upgrade in goal as they'll look to start moving towards their organization upswing as soon as this season or next.
