Beyond an extension, there still exists the possibility that the Leafs could look to trade Nylander, should the right deal materialize. However, with the slick-skating Swede having just one year left on his deal with free agency perhaps in his sights next summer, it may be a tricky trade to facilitate.
We can never truly escape the trade rumours in Toronto, with the Leafs essentially being linked to every name on the market each and every year. However, we do like to think that we know what types of deals will not occur. Such is the case involving the latest Nylander trade rumour coming from Hockey Buzz's "Eklund", who is suggesting that the Leafs and Isles are discussing a deal that would send Nylander to Long Island, along with Timothy Liljegren and a pick in exchange for Oliver Wahlstrom, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and a pick.
First and foremost, if Brad Treliving presented this deal to Brendan Shanahan and the MLSE board, he'd be tarred and feathered before being kicked to the curb. In addition, he might be black-balled from working as an NHL GM ever again. This is a deal that would get the Peter Chiarelli stamp of approval.
Look, there's nothing wrong with Wahlstrom and Pageau. They're both fine NHL hockey players. But the fact of the matter is that Nylander is an excellent scoring winger in the prime of his career. He's going to fetch more than Pageau and Wahlstrom if he's dealt. He just is, even with only one year left on his deal. Also, taking a loss on a pick swap isn't something that would happen in a Nylander deal. The Leafs would almost certainly be getting a 1st round pick in almost any deal for Nylander, unless it was a star for star swap, 1-for-1.
I think we can all sleep pretty soundly at night knowing that a deal like this simply won't happen.
